Gneiss-Age

Exhibition duration: 24th of July 2025 until 19th of April 2026

Video Feature: Alien Landscapes by Felix Höhne

In the exhibition "Gneiss-Aget", gneiss from the Rauris Valley is examined using analogue and digital means. The artistic exploration of this stone includes, on the one hand, a playful exploration of the combinatorial possibilities of stone fragments to form regular or amorphous spatial bodies and, on the other hand, an examination of the structure as material and substance.

3 studies on the pole series, gneiss and structural steel, 2025

The 3 studies on the pole series work with the system of perforated bricks threaded onto grid intersections. The previous objects were determined by strict orthogonal systems. In the three current studies, the square basic grid changes in favour of progressive compression or stretching. The proportional movement goes hand in hand with the dynamisation of the rod axes, which can now also describe slight bends. The group of three plays with variations that have already been worked out and develops new paths and formal solutions on this basis, culminating in the expressive single image of the centre study.

Bergland, Gneiss, 50 x 360 x 60 cm, 2025

The Bergland installation opens up an associative space between an elongated chain of mountain ridges, drifting storm clouds and wide stretches of bridge. The stone segments have natural edges with rough surfaces. The top-down orientation of the showcase lighting casts flashlight-like light reflections on the relief of the stone surface and reveals the mineralogical richness of the Rauris gneiss. The stone segments lie parallel in several tracks and in this arrangement create complex spatial overlaps and simultaneous sliding offset sections on an imaginary timeline.

This leads us to the study of stone surfaces, the phenomenon of transparency in stone, its constituents and its geological formation. In its purest form, the analysis of gneiss takes us into the realm of the subtle structure. In the thin section of stone, which is examined with a polarising microscope, undreamt-of worlds of weightless beauty can be discovered that are otherwise hidden from the eye.

Das Video Alien Landscapes von Felix Höhne entwickelt dazu eine neue Perspektive auf den tief im Inneren des Gesteins verborgenen Mikrokosmos und dessen Entstehungsprozess.
